Catching & Rigging Live Bonita For Bait - Part 2
You want to catch bigger fish? Starting using bigger baits. In part 2 of our rigging bonita for live bait, we show how we catch and rig them up while out on a charter.
We troll feathers on planers to catch the bonita in the first 30 minutes or so of the charter. This gives us the freshest bait possible for the trip. It is very important to store your bonita in tuba tubes, as they won't last long in traditional baitwells.
Once we get to about 150ft to 200ft, we begin to put the baits out using a triple treble hook rig. Since the baits are so big, you don't want to lose fish due to short strikes. Wahoos typically bite the back side of the fish and usually how we hook them, so its important to have those 2 hooks down the sides of the fish.
Using bullets you will catch big wahoo, sailfish, marlin, barracuda, sharks and more. Not many game fish around here that will refuse a fresh bonita on the troll.

The hammerhead shark is one of my favorites because not only are they cool looking, but they put up a great fight. On this trip, we had a great group of guys that wanted to get some fish for Ceviche and as well as pull on some big sharks.
After getting into several kingfish, we had enough fish for the coolers and it was time to shark fish. We put up the kite as well as baits down deep and got lucky when this beautiful hammer head shark ate the long bait. 3 anglers later, we tagged and released so that this beautiful fish could fight another day. Today we had an amazing family on aboard for a full day of Deep Sea Fishing off Fort Lauderdale. We started by trolling reef for kingfish, tuna and bonita. The bonita were covering us up, so we decided to catch several and go shark fishing.
Once we had enough fresh live baits, we motored out to deeper waters and proceed to put out 2 kites baits and 2 deep baits. It wasn't long before the sharks found our scent.
We immediately got a nice one on the close bait and while we were reeling in this fish, we noticed there was at least 2 other hammerheads circling our kite baits. We dropped back to them and had the double.
Both sharks were tagged and released for research.

Rescue at Sea as Charter Boat Catches Fire off Fort Lauderdale Beach

I always says I have the best captains and crew in the business and today showed just that. We were out trolling with our clients, when we spotted another charter boat start to smoke. In a matter of seconds the boat was engulfed with flames. We cut our lines and raced over there. We couldn't make the rescue from the stern because of the fire, so we went bow to bow and thankfully got everyone off unharmed. The boat ended up sinking off Fort Lauderdale beach. Vermilion Snapper Fishing in Fort Lauderdale

Vermillion Snapper also known as beeliners and similar to a red snapper are great fish to target off Fort Lauderdale for the meat quality. We generally catch them in the summer months and target them when the seas are calm as to position the boat overs structures and drop the baits down to them.
They get as big as 24 inches and about 5 pounds, but more common are the size we catch in this video.
The Minimum size limit on a Vermillion Snapper is 12" TL.

The Aftermath of Charter Boat on Fire in Fort Lauderdale
Here is some unseen footage from our cockpit after we picked up the captain and crew. You can see the fire department tried to contain the fire and get the boat into shallower water to reduce the amount of environmental damage. Shortly after, the boat sank off Fort Lauderdale beach where it was salvaged. Lots of debris floated up to the beach and they had to shut it down the rest of day. The Best Summertime Drift Fishing In A Long Time
July has been hot, but the drift fishing has stolen the show. We are consistently getting into the fish including vermillion snapper, yellow eyes, mangroves and the occasional mutton snapper.
On the sportfishing, we have been trolling planers with bonita strips for most of our catches including kingfish, bonita and some great black grouper over the wrecks.
As we get into August, I'm expected the mahi mahi fishing to be a little better in close. Right now they are pushed way out around 20 miles making hard for us to get to them especially on half day trips. But I'm hoping the SE winds will bring more into our area and shallower. Using Live Bonita For BAIT! #1 Fishing Trip

You want to catch big fish, try fishing big baits. We love trolling live bonita here in Fort Lauderdale. It opens up the opportunities for big wahoo, monster kingfish, sharks, sailfish, big mahi, big tuna and much more.
Other local charter boats, call it swinging for the fences, but with the right technique, you will increase your odds.
Here's how to do it:
1. Catch Live bonita using feathers, spoons, etc.
2. Store live bonita in tuna tubes. They won't store long in your traditional baitwell. You can rig a saltwater wash down to do the job to get started.
3. Rig up your live bonita with 3 hooks. One in the nose and 2 trailers in the side of the body.
4. Use wire leader
5. Troll at a slow enough speed so your bonita swims well and lives.
6. Drag setting is really preference, but we like to let them eat so a light enough drag setting to where the line doesn't come off the reel, but allow us to drop box to the fish.
7. Come tight while staying in gear with the boat. If it is a sail or big wahoo, sometimes they will charge the boat and the slack can cause them to get off.

Hollywood Party Boat Catches Kingfish

How To Rig Baits For Shark Fishing
On our shark fishing charters, we like to have several different baits and cover the entire water column to give our customers the best opportunity at catching fish. While we can't guarantee the sharks will cooperate everyday, we can guarantee you will get the best opportunity. In this video our mate works to set a spread that consist of surface baits, deep baits and live baits. All the baits worth together to draw in the sharks. The live bait will give off the vibrations and the dead baits will give off scent. Some days the sharks only want a fresh live bait and others they won't even look at it. If you can catch fresh baits the day you are fishing, you will give yourself a better chance. In this video we caught fresh bonita and kingfish using planers and bonita strips. The captain was trolling around while our mate was rigging up. We love sharks and we do everything we can to protect them and our oceans. All sharks and carefully handled, tagged and released.
